How to wear the Vinyl Trend

Vinyl is a big fashion trend for Autumn / Winter, the front rows of fashion week were full of vinyl clad fashionistas and celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Alexa Chung, and Kylie Jenner have been spotted rocking the trend in vinyl skirts, coats and trousers. But how do you wear this trend if you are a 30 something mum whose first thought when you see a pair of vinyl trousers is ‘Well at least they’re wipe clean.’ ?

If you want to try out the vinyl trend but you aren’t sure how to wear it without looking like you’ve popped out to the shops in something from Ann Summers then check out these celebrities below, showing us exactly how to get it right.

L-R Annie Mac is ticking two trend boxes here by wearing red vinyl. (More about Autumn / Winter’s Red trend here.) A mac like this is the perfect way to try out the trend ‘safely’. This loose fitting hooded style keeps it casual – I think this style is better than a belted mac which might make you look like Trinity from the Matrix!

Fearne Cotton always manages to look super stylish despite having two children and probably not much time to get ready in the morning. She dresses down her vinyl trousers by wearing them with a loose jumper and flat stompy boots (also a big trend for Autumn / Winter). I also like that she wears her trousers slightly loose so they don’t look too sprayed on and dominatrix like.

Lily Cole mixes her tough black vinyl mac with a pretty floaty floral dress, it shouldn’t work but it does! This is an excellent lesson in trying unexpected pairings and using girly pastels to tone down a vinyl look.

Krysten Ritter shows us how to wear a vinyl skirt without looking like a sex worker, by wearing this skater style instead of a pencil or mini skirt she makes it girly and casual. Lets face it pencil skirts and mini’s just aren’t very practical when you are chasing a toddler round the lounge.

I’ve put together my favourite vinyl items from the high street for you to try below.

L-R Black vinyl frill front mini skirt £32.00 River Island – this skirt is a bit short for me but for those of you with good legs the ruffle adds an extra element of fun and pairing it with the t-shirt keeps it casual.

T-shirt with floral vinyl patch £15.99 Zara, if you are nervous about trying out the vinyl trend then this t-shirt is the perfect start.

Red vinyl trousers £49.99 Mango, I LOVE these trousers the red colour is perfect and they are cropped in exactly the right place.

Silver high waisted trousers £31.00 Asos, these tick the metallics trend and pairing them with Vans looks great. Also adding the pastel fur coat softens the look.

Buttoned vinyl trench £89.99 Mango, I love the retro style of this trench with it’s big white buttons.

If you still feel like vinyl is not a trend you are going to be able to pull off maybe consider a flash of vinyl in your make-up and accessories.

L-R Patent Leather Ankle Boots £125 & Other Stories, Pull & Bear Vinyl Lock Front Bag £15.99 ASOS, NYX Vinyl Liquid Liner £6.00 Boots, Patent Leather Sash Belt £15.99 Mango, Orly Liquid Vinyl Nail Varnish £11.99 Superdrug.
