It’s June! It’s five months (151 days to be precise) since I quit drinking and lots of things have changed. I’ve lost half a stone and dyed my hair orange! I started sleeping properly for the first time in years. I turned into a yoga obsessed book worm. Most importantly i’m happy and my mental health is massively improved. (Although I must admit it’s been a bit all over the place for the last week.)
Over these months i’ve become more and more interested in all things sober. I feel the tide is turning and slowly slowly people are starting to talk about and think about cutting back on alcohol or quitting completely. There are so many exciting things happening in the world of sober living and I want to start talking about them here on my blog. So i’ve decided to do a monthly round up of new drinks, new bars, new sober friendly meet-ups, new books, new things to do to get your kicks when you are sober and new ways of dealing with the anxiety and stress that you might have been drinking to push away.
So here it is my first Sober not Boring blog post. Thanks for reading.
What is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage made by adding a symbiotic culture of bacteria (called a scoby) to a solution of black, white or green tea and sugar. It sounds a bit rank but it tastes good AND it has numerous health benefits.
- It’s packed with antioxidents
- It improves your digestive system
- It is thought to improve your immune system and help with stiff joints
What does it taste like?
Initially it tastes slightly fizzy, tart and sweet at the same time. But it can actually be flavoured with all sorts of different things. There are absolutely loads of different types of Kombucha and i’ve put together some delicious ones below.
L-R L.A Brewery Lemongrass Kombucha labrewery.co.uk, Jarr Passionfruit Kombucha drydrinker.com, Clever Kombucha Coffee cleverkombucha.co.uk, Lo Bros Raspberry & Lemon Kombucha wisebartender.co.uk, Real Kombucha Royal Flush drydrinker.com, Holos Ginger & Hibiscus Kombucha drydrinker.com , Genie Crisp Citrus Kombucha geniedrinks.co.uk.
Important side note!
Due to the fermentation process some Kombucha is alcoholic. If you are teetotal and don’t want a drop of alcohol however low in your drink you should check before you buy.
The Parrot is an extremely swanky cocktail bar and music venue in London’s Aldwych. It is part of the Waldorf Hilton and it can boast some serious celebrity credentials. It was launched in November 2018 by Actor Idris Elba and twin brothers Lee & Nicki Caulfield and since then it’s Insta-friendly interiors and truly original cocktails have got everyone talking.
My partner visited The Parrot recently with his work and came back with lots of excited stories of the amazing cocktails, so I decided to check out their mocktail menu. I was really impressed with the wide selection and unusual options available. I got in touch with Lee & Nicki Caulfield (sadly Idris was a bit busy..) to let them know how impressed I was and they filled me in on some really exciting news, The Parrot are working to make mocktail versions of their entire cocktail menu! That is 22 cocktails and counting!
It’s so nice to see a bar thinking seriously about their sober customers and working to make things even better! You can check out their current mocktail menu below.
Anyone who knows me personally or follows me on insta will know that I have become yoga obsessed. I’ve swapped downing pints for downward facing dogs and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I genuinely believe I have yoga’d myself sober and I feel like there is a direct link between practicing yoga and maintaining my sobriety, which is why I try to do it every day.
Often I am practising at home using videos from my favourite You Tuber https://www.youtube.com/user/yogawithkassandra but twice a week you will find me here in the pod.
Heated to 37 degrees this purple womb-like inflatable pod is for me a place to come and retreat. An hour of time just for me to be with me. Not only does it calm my mind, increase my self-confidence and help me focus on my sobriety it’s also a bloody good work out. You leave the pod drenched in sweat, feeling like you have really pushed yourself and the results become obvious in just a few weeks. My body is more toned my bum less wobbly.
Honestly it has never been about physical change for me, I have always been looking for a way to help myself mentally. I drank to calm anxiety and depression (all the while making it worse) and I needed something to replace the bottle. That’s what Hot Pod Yoga does for me and if you are struggling with your sobriety or with your mental health I really recommend you try it.
hotpodyoga.com have classes all over the country so you should be able to find one near you. If you live near me I recommend the one in Ruislip and I also really love this place www.hotyogahouse.co.uk . If you aren’t sure hot yoga is for you why not try a normal yoga class? Again if you are in my area I cannot recommend this wonderful teacher Isabelle enough, she is beautiful inside and out and makes me feel calm whenever I am near her – www.respirayoga.co.uk
Drunk Mom by Jowita Bydlowska
Since getting sober I have read a LOT of recovery memoirs, this is the most recent one i’ve read and honestly I found it a hard read. Jowita is shockingly honest about her time as an alcoholic mother to a very young baby. Her drinking got so bad that she lost her partner and almost lost her child too. Despite numerous attempts to stop drinking and even a stint in rehab it took till she hit rock bottom and nearly lost everything before she finally managed to stop drinking with the help of AA.
This was tough reading for me, although Jowita’s experience is very extreme and a totally different end of the scale to me in regards to alcoholism, there were things in this book that I could relate to. There were things that made me cry on the train because even though I never got this bad, I could clearly see a direct path between what I was and where I could have ended up.
There are things I am ashamed of, times I know I wasn’t behaving responsibly and I let my children down. I’m grateful that my children are young and hopefully never remember their drunk mum, but I think this book is an excellent reminder of how mummy wine culture can turn into something much less socially acceptable.
Drunk Mom is available on Amazon
Is it possible to quit drinking and still be the girl that everyone wants to party with? Yes it is! Millie Gooch is the founder of The Sober Girl Society and she currently has 32.8K fellow sober ladies who want you in their gang. I find her feed inspirational, a reminder to me that quitting drinking is just the beginning for me and that I am certainly not alone. Get one of her excellent pin badges and watch your new sober friends flock to you. I’ve only had mine for two months and i’ve already met two new sober friends this way. Thanks Millie!
Amethyst is the stone of sobriety, translated the word Amethyst literally means NOT DRUNK. It’s also the stone of transformation, calmness and spirituality. As a gift to myself to celebrate my 100 days sober I bought myself the necklace (top right) but if jewellery isn’t your thing i’ve found some other Amethyst products you might like.
